When it comes to the Top 10 on Netflix, there’s almost always at least one dark, twisty psychological thriller in the mix and right now is no exception. A quick scroll today reveals a new contender climbing the ranks: Unchosen. The six-episode series has already landed the number five spot and it’s giving full-on eerie, can’t-look-away energy.

The show takes viewers inside a fictional, ultra-conservative religious sect and centers on Rosie (Molly Windsor), a woman living in an isolated cult known as the “Fellowship of the Divine.” Her tightly controlled world starts to crack when a mysterious outsider, Sam (Fra Fee), enters the picture after saving her daughter. What follows? An affair, rising tension, and a slow unraveling of the community’s strict rules. The series also stars Asa Butterfield, Siobhan Finneran and Christopher Eccleston—aka, a very solid cast.

While Unchosen is fictional, it pulls inspiration from real-life British cults, which makes it hit a little harder. Director Jim Loach told The Independent that writer Julie Gearey “actually grew up in an area in the south of England where some people at school were going home to mums and dads who were in cults.”

He added, “I was really fascinated by that, because she’d spoken to people who’d come out of being in a cult about their experiences. I thought there was a huge amount in the script that resonated with contemporary society, and I felt it was a really brilliant time to do a story about people living in a cult.”

Considering the show only dropped on April 21, its quick climb into the Top 10 is pretty impressive. And based on early reactions, viewers are especially into the performances.

“A compelling story with an excellent cast,” one person wrote on IMDb. Another said, “Like a really good Harlan Coben so many twists and turns, this is edge of your seat viewing,” while a third added, “Well worth a watch for an easy binge with some outstanding performances.”

All six episodes of Unchosen are streaming now on Netflix.
