‘This Is Us’ Theory: Will Sophie Become Rebecca’s Nurse?

The theory makes total sense. Kevin and Sophie declare their feelings for each other at Kate’s wedding, so the first part is practically a given. And during that same episode, Sophie puts a huge emphasis on her career as a “travel nurse.” This means she’s fully capable of caring for someone like Rebecca (whose Alzheimer’s disease is rapidly progressing).

Her job could be a coincidence, but This Is Us writers aren’t the type to include unnecessary details unless there’s a greater purpose. So, the fact that Sophie talks about her nursing degree on multiple occasions must count for something.

Plus, Sophie seems to have a soft spot for Rebecca. She’s known her since she was a child, so she has loads of history with her former (or soon-to-be?) mother-in-law. At the wedding, they speak multiple times, and Sophie is taken aback by how little Rebecca remembers about Kevin. Sophie also notices the toll that Rebecca’s illness is taking on the entire family, so it’s only a matter of time before she steps in…or so we hope.

This Is Us returns to NBC on Tuesday, May 3, at 9 p.m.
