As a true-crime lover, I’m always on the hunt for a thrilling crime doc that will keep me on the edge of my seat—and after seeing this terrifying trailer, I'm pretty sure I've found my next watch.

Inspired by the book of the same title and co-authored by Dr. Katherine Ramsland and Tracy Ullman, The Serial Killer’s Apprentice is a two-hour documentary that delves into Dean Corll, aka “The Candyman Killer,” one of the most sinister serial killers in recent history. This doc isn’t just a retelling of Corll’s crimes, however. It also features an in-depth interview with his accomplice, Elmer Wayne Henley Jr., making it the first time Henley has spoken about the nature of his crimes in over 50 years.

The special also includes Henley's conversations with renowned criminologist Dr. Ramsland, who dives into Henley's mind and memory of what motivated him to act as Corll’s accomplice in what was known as the largest mass murder in U.S. history at the time. As for Corll and Henley Jr.’s crimes, the two terrorized the streets of Houston in the early to mid-1970s, luring and brutally killing at least 28 young men.

Corll was able to get away with this brutality for years, not just due to his unassuming nature in the community, but largely because of the help he received from Henley and another accomplice, David Brooks. That, however, all came to a screeching halt in 1973, when...well, I won't spoil things for you.

The Serial Killer’s Apprentice offers a holistic portrait of Henley, his psyche, and the tragedy that still lingers in Houston. Plus, there’s expansive archival footage, insight from victims’ loved ones, local authorities and journalists who are still unpacking the extent of Corll’s crimes decades later.

Sounds like I’ve got something to add to my next #weekendwatch.

You can stream The Serial Killer’s Apprentice on HBO Max.
