This Netflix Thriller Just Cracked the Top 10 & Critics Can’t Decide If It’s Genius or Totally Unhinged

This one's a doozy

There are so many shows dropping on Netflix these days, it’s honestly hard to keep up. So when a new release breaks into the Top 10, it definitely catches my attention. And when it does it just one day after premiering? Even more impressive. Remember Sullivan’s Crossing and The Waterfront? Both are still holding strong in the Top 10. But now, there’s a new drama in town that’s beating them both—and it’s called The Hunting Wives.

I’ll be honest, this wasn’t one of those series I’d heard buzz about for weeks. But when I saw the title (and a few familiar faces), I got curious. Here’s what I found. The Hunting Wives is based on the bestselling novel by May Cobb and follows a woman who relocates with her family from Boston to Texas. There, she strikes up a friendship with a glamorous local socialite—one that quickly spirals into obsession, seduction…and murder. Yep.

And those familiar faces? Well, it's the stacked cast that includes Malin Åkerman (Dollface), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Dermot Mulroney (Chicago Fire), Chrissy Metz (This Is Us), Jaime Ray Newman (Dopesick), Katie Lowes (Scandal) and Evan Jonigkeit (Sweetbitter).

What really caught my eye, though, were the wild headlines. TIME called it “a bonkers, bisexual culture war soap,” while Variety described it as “a very zany, very gay, red-state murder mystery.”

Currently, The Hunting Wives is sitting at a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews all over the place. One critic called it “too much, in ways both delectable and exhausting,” while another said the show “is ridiculous in many ways… which would be more of a problem if it weren’t so precisely engineered to be impossible to stop watching.”

With reactions like that, how can I not check it out? And the best part, the entire first season is available to stream now.
