Hulu Releases Premiere Date & First-Look Images for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

After The Handmaid’s Tale season four ended on such a massive cliffhanger, fans have been eagerly waiting for any update regarding season five—or even just a glimpse at what’s to come. And now, that day has finally come.

Hulu recently released two first-look photos from The Handmaid’s Tale season five. The streaming service also announced that the new episodes will premiere on September 14.

Viewers may recall, the previous season ends with June (Elisabeth Moss) orchestrating the murder of her former abuser, Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), with the help of the refugee Handmaids.

The slideshow features not one, but two never-before-seen photos. The first one shows June, who must deal with the “consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose,” as stated by the official logline for season five.

Another picture shows the Commander’s wife, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), wearing a black veil and dress. But, instead of looking mournful, she appears to be smiling. (Creepy, much?) Per Hulu, Serena is looking to “raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada.”

Back in December 2020, The Handmaid’s Tale was renewed for season five by the streaming service. Most of the cast is expected to return for the new installment, but Alexis Bledel (who played Emily/Ofglen) is leaving the show.

Last month, the actress announced that she’s exiting the series ahead of season five. Her statement read: “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time. I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”

Mark your calendars.
