I’ve had the Sinners release date circled on my calendar ever since its first announcement, and boy is this movie much better than what I could have ever imagined. Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers who make a return to their hometown for a fresh start, only to discover that things have….changed, and not in a good way. I caught an early screening of the film this week, and I have to say that Sinners is one of the most refreshing movies I have seen in a long time. Coogler is truly a genius, and I’m not being dramatic here, people. His vision for blending classic and modern (the film is set in the 1930s) is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Simply put, Sinners is the definition of a piping hot boiling pot waiting to explode, which is exactly why it debuted with a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
New Michael B. Jordan Horror-Thriller Just Debuted with a 100% Rating on Rotten Tomatoes—Here's My Honest Review
This movie knocks you off your feet

Throughout the film, I was consistently on edge, wondering what’s just happened (for which I've got to give Coogler his credit). This leads me to Jordan, the star of the show. I feel confident saying that this is Jordan's best role to date, or at least his most diverse. Playing a dual role is the ultimate of an actor's prowess, in my opinion, because the actor has to convincingly play two different characters within the same project—not an easy task by any means, but one Jordan does with ease.
And perhaps I’m wrong in this assessment, but I don’t think anybody other than Coogler could have gotten Jordan to even take on this type of role in the first place. In my opinion, those two are becoming the 2020s version of Denzel Washington and Spike Lee, and like their predecessors, they bring out the best in each other.
Oh, and I absolutely can’t forget the cinematography and the score, which contribute to the overall brilliance of this film. Sinners was shot on IMAX, which means it absolutely needs to be experienced in a theater, something that is becoming a rarity in our current film society. If you haven’t seen the video of Coogler breaking down the concept of aspect ratios and all the different ways you could potentially watch this movie, I highly suggest you give it a watch—it has me seriously considering flying out to one of the five locations that are showing it on 70mm film, which is very rare. And the score? Haunting, brilliant and beautiful.
There’s been a lot of hype surrounding Sinners, but I guarantee you the hype is, indeed, warranted.
Sinners is in theaters now.
