You can count me in anytime a thriller film is trending on Netflix, and you can especially count me in if the actor starring is Morgan Freeman (and Scarlett Johansson, of course). What movie am I talking about? Why none other than 2014’s Lucy, which I admittedly need to rewatch because I looked at the year and title and automatically assumed it was an extension of Johansson’s “Black Widow” character from Marvel (If you know, you know). Nonetheless, Lucy is NOT a Marvel movie, but instead a gripping action thriller that sees Johansson starring as a young woman named Lucy, who unexpectedly gets thrown into a life of crime when her boyfriend tricks her into delivering a briefcase to, well, some drug dealers. And believe me when I say the trailer is only a glimpse of the chaos that ensues during the film.

Of course, the drug dealers can’t let Lucy go because she’s seen too much, so they abduct her and turn her into a drug mule by surgically implanting powerful chemicals into her body that essentially transform her into a human encyclopedia with superhuman capabilities. Since Lucy now possesses supernatural powers like telekinesis and telepathy, these drug dealers are in trouble because she’s after them for revenge, and they are unable to physically stop her.

Now, where does Morgan Freeman fit into all of this? Well, Lucy is basically dying because she is rapidly progressing towards being able to use 100 percent of her brain capacity, which us humans are actually  *not* supposed to be able to do. So, Freeman’s character, Professor Samuel, is the neurologist tasked with trying to save her before it's too late.

At the time of its release, many critics found Lucy to be “nonsensical,” but that opinion has begun to shift a decade after its debut. “This movie is under-appreciated. The acting, the visual style and the vibe of the movie is great. Yes, it is not realistic, but it is a science fiction movie. It is based on a myth, and a myth that the majority of people now know is a myth. I think it is why people hated it,” writes one Rotten Tomatoes reviewer, who adds, “If this came out in the early 2000s, this movie would be a classic.”

I know what I’m watching again this weekend, and I suggest you do too.

You can stream Lucy on Netflix now.
