Netflix Just Canceled My Favorite New Show 'The Waterfront', So Here Are 3 Shows to Fill the Void

No cancellation in sight for these shows

It’s not often that a Netflix cancellation sparks serious outrage but The Waterfront was one of those rare cases. Loosely inspired by the real-life story of creator Kevin Williamson, the series followed the Buckley family, a multigenerational crew of fishermen navigating secrets, betrayal, addiction and greed in the fictional town of Havenport, North Carolina.

The cast was stacked too starring Holt McCallany, Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, Maria Bello and Brady Hepner.

The Waterfront dropped on Netflix June 19 and absolutely crushed it, holding a spot on the global Top 10 chart for English-language series for five weeks straight. But despite what seemed like solid success, it was still cancelled.

So now, there’s a very specific void to fill. Luckily, I’ve found three shows (with multiple seasons) that just might do the trick.

1. Animal Kingdom

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Cast: Ellen Barkin, Jake Weary, Scott Speedman, Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Finn Cole
  • Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes 88% | IMDb 8.2/10

Kicking things off strong with this gritty crime drama starring Jake Weary—yep, the same guy from The Waterfront. But unlike The Waterfront’s short-lived single season, this one gives you a solid six seasons to really sink your teeth into.

Animal Kingdom follows the chaotic lives of the Cody family, a tight-knit but totally dysfunctional crew running a criminal empire in Southern California. At the helm is Janine “Smurf” Cody, the family’s cold, calculating matriarch. From armed robberies to power plays, the show dives deep into moral gray areas, explosive family dynamics and just how far they’ll go to stay on top.

2. Bloodline

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Cast: Kyle Chandler, Linda Cardellini, Ben Mendelsohn, Chloë Sevigny, and more
  • Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes 74% | IMDb 7.8/10

Keeping with the family drama theme, Bloodline dives into the lives of the wealthy and well-respected Rayburn family in the Florida Keys. Everything seems picture-perfect, until the black sheep son, Danny, returns home for his parents' anniversary. His arrival cracks open long-buried secrets and drags the family into a darker, criminal underworld.

3. Ozark

  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Cast: Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Sofia Hublitz, Julia Garner and more
  • Reviews: Rotten Tomatoes 86% | IMDb 8.4/10

I’d be surprised if you haven’t heard of this one already—it’s a serious crowd-pleaser with four intense seasons under its belt.

Ozark is a Netflix drama that follows Marty Byrde, a Chicago financial advisor who’s forced to launder money for a Mexican drug cartel after a deal goes south. To stay alive, he relocates his family to the Missouri Ozarks, where things only get messier. Between shady locals, rising tension, and increasingly high stakes, the Byrdes dive deeper into a criminal world they can’t easily escape.
