‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 3: a Major Update from Selena Gomez (Plus, a Trailer, Cast Deets & More)

It’s officially happening: Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for a third season. This means we’ll see our favorite crime podcast trio—Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez)—back for more adventures, including a wedding. So what should fans expect from the next season? Well, viewers will surely know soon enough because one of the show’s stars just gave an exciting new update about the third season.

Here’s everything we know about Only Murders in the Building season three so far.

1. Who Will Return For Season 3?

As you can see in the video above, our favorite podcasters will be returning for season three. In the clip, the trio seems to be communicating in a personal group chat. Charles (Martin) proceeds to ask the viewers about the second season of Only Murders in the Building, all while typing the message and sending a voice memo.

Then, Mabel (Gomez) announces some news fans would be happy to hear. “Guess what?” she says. “All of our favorite characters will be returning for Season 3!” Of course, Oliver is excited like the rest of us.

Several of the other Arconia residents and frequenters may come back to reprise their roles in the new season, including Jackie Hoffman (Uma Heller), Michael Cyril Creighton (Howard Morris), Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Detective Williams), Nathan Lane (Teddy Dimas), James Caverly (Theo Dimas) and Adriane Lenox (Roberta).

2. What About Newcomers?

Paul Rudd will join the cast, but he’s technically not a newcomer because he appeared in the season 2 finale. In October 2022, Deadline also announced that Grey’s Anatomy alum Jesse Williams will star in the third installment. He will play a “documentarian with a particular interest in the case.”

According to Deadline, Ashley Park (Emily in Paris) will also join the cast as a character named Kimber, who loves Broadway.

Though it has not been confirmed yet, we hope to see the return of some surprise guest stars like Amy Schumer, Jane Lynch, Tina Fey, Shirley MacLaine, Michael Rappaport, Andrea Martin, Sting, Mark Consuelos and more.

3. Is Meryl Streep Joining the Cast?

In January 2023, fans learned that Streep is joining the cast. It all started when Gomez posted a video on social media featuring the cast—including Streep—hanging out on the set of season 3.

Then, during the 2023 Oscars, Hulu debuted another trailer featuring a first glimpse of Streep in OMITB. The clip showed a brief montage and teased a “surprise” before cutting to Streep sitting at a table read. “Oh, my god! It’s me,” she said.

4. Has Production for Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Already Begun?

Why yes, it has! Back in January 2023, it was announced that production for Only Murders in the Building season 3 officially kicked off. And now, it appears that the cast and crew have already finished filming. Last week on Instagram, Gomez shared a huge update on the third season.

In a new photo posted on her personal profile, the actress is standing right next to Meryl Streep and they are both smiling from ear to ear. The caption read, “Well we wrapped season 3 of @onlymurdershulu.”

Gomez continued, “I’m not sure I have enough words to explain just how beautiful this season has been. It has been deliriously hilarious, challenging and for me, an absolute dream. I’ll post more soon. But I’ll I leave it with the woman I adore, look up to and love.”

At the moment, there is no official release date for Only Murders in the Building season three. But, judging by the timeline of seasons one and two, the new installment might come out this summer. New episodes will premiere on Hulu and will most likely be released weekly.

5. What Will It Be About?

*Spoilers ahead*

While the plot for Only Murders in the Building season three still remains a secret, it’s safe to assume the third season will pick up right where the second one leaves off. Without giving *too much* away, the trio unmasked Bunny’s killer in season two, while also trying to clear their names. But after a new season finale death occurs on a very public stage, this murder will most likely be the central focus for the next installment.

So, what should fans expect from the new season? While the series co-creator John Hoffman can’t say too much, he reassures audiences that the third season will be worth the wait. Back in August, he sat down with an exclusive interview with TVLine and teased fans on what’s the come in season three.

“I’m about six weeks into writing with the room for Season 3, and what we have planned is insane and so exciting. It’s also very twisty,” Hoffman told the outlet. “We try to check ourselves, like, ‘OK, what can we do and how can we do this differently?’ and ‘What feels like a different take? A fresh take?’ So I can only say hang tight! There’s a lot going on, and certainly the victim is colorfully drawn so far.”

6. Is Mabel Getting Married in Only Murders Season 3?

That’s the question that’s on everyone’s mind. It all started when Gomez shared a behind-the-scenes photo on Twitter, featuring herself wearing a wedding dress on the set of Only Murders in the Building season 3. She wrote, “I have no caption. Just a regular day at work. @onlymurdershulu.”
