Uh Oh! Netflix Cancels Production on Meghan Markle’s Animated Project

Meghan Markle is the latest victim of Netflix’s cutbacks.

According to Deadline, the streaming service has canceled the Duchess of Sussex’s animated series, titled Pearl. Although the project was still in production, it’s one of many that didn’t make the cut in the aftermath of Netflix’s drop in subscribers. (Since the beginning of the year, its total number of users has fallen by 200,000.)

The animated series was supposed to focus on the adventures of a young girl named Pearl, who discovers her own potential as she meets famous women in history. (Markle even enlisted Elton John’s husband, David Furnish, as an executive producer.) The titular character was reportedly inspired by Markle. As Hello! magazine points out (via The Bump), the name “Meghan” means “pearl.”

Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, own an entertainment company called Archewell Productions, which has a multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix. Last year, the duchess released a statement describing her excitement to work with the streaming service.

“Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges,” she said. “I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history.”

How will this affect Markle’s future relationship with Netflix? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
