Emma Thompson to Star as Miss Trunchbull in Netflix’s ‘Matilda’ Remake

It looks like Emma Thompson will be teaching us a lesson or two, since she's about to become the new Miss Trunchbull.

Netflix recently confirmed that the Late Night actress is joining their musical remake of Matilda, which will draw inspiration from both the 1996 film and the musical stage play version, Matilda the Musical.

The streaming platform also announced that Alisha Weir will star as Matilda, while Captain Marvels Lashana Lynch will be Miss Honey.

In case you're unfamiliar with the plot, Matilda (which is based on Roald Dahl's 1988 book of the same name) follows a brilliant young girl who has to deal with irresponsible parents and her cold-hearted headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. But after she learns about her telekinetic powers, she uses them to her advantage and finally takes a stand.

The original playwright, Dennis Kelly, is adapting the script with original music by Tim Minchin, and the film will be produced by Jon Finn, Luke Kelly (from the Roald Dahl Story Company), Tim Bevan and Erin Fellner (from Working Title).

Matthew Warchus, who spearheaded Matilda the Musical, will be directing the movie. He said in a statement, “Matilda will be an imaginative and fresh retelling of the award-winning musical, Matilda, featuring talented young newcomers, alongside established stars. I look forward to introducing this beloved and powerful story to a new generation of fans around the world.”

We get the feeling that Emma will make a very convincing Miss Trunchbull.
