The trailer offers a glimpse into the musical, which tells the story of a socially awkward teenager, who gets caught up in a web of lies. It all starts when Evan makes up a fabricated friendship with a classmate, who recently took his own life. He’s forced to go along with his new reality, all while navigating the highs and lows of high school.
“Connor showed me that I wasn’t alone,” Evan says in the clip. “Nobody is.”
Dear Evan Hansen features an all-star cast, including Amy Adams (The Woman in the Window), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), Colton Ryan (Little Voice), Nik Dodani (Atypical), DeMarius Copes (Broadway’s Mean Girls) and Danny Pino (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit).
The film is directed by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being A Wallflower), while Steven Levenson (The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin) is writing the screenplay (which is inspired by the Broadway show he co-wrote with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul). Marc Platt (La La Land) and Adam Siegel (2 Guns) are serving as producers.
The movie includes all the original songs—like “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through a Window,” “For Forever” and “Words Fail”—so don’t forget to warm up your vocal cords.
Dear Evan Hansen is scheduled to hit theaters (yes, you read that right), but based on recent releases, we wouldn’t be surprised if the movie quickly becomes available to purchase (or rent) on streaming services like Amazon Prime. *Crosses fingers*
