There’s nothing quite like an intense 1990s thriller, and the ongoing success of these types of movies on Netflix continues to prove that point.

The latest example is Sigourney Weaver’s 1995 film Copycat, which didn’t receive a lot of fanfare at the time of its release, but has since gained a cult-like following among thriller fans for its riveting storyline and strong performances.

Netflix just recently added the title to its catalog, and it hasn’t taken long to start making a splash, climbing to number nine on the platform's top 10 list. The film sees Weaver starring as world-renowned criminal psychologist Dr. Helen Hudson, who teams up with a detective (Holly Hunter) to catch a serial killer on the loose. Hudson is also struggling with PTSD, having been attacked by an unhinged fan and witnessing two police officers get killed in front of her.

Despite her agoraphobia, Hudson still manages to enjoy her life in San Francisco. That is, until she notices there’s been a recent string of murders happening in the city that are eerily similar to those of the Boston Strangler’s crimes twenty years prior.  What follows is an intense investigaton to catch the killer who, unbeknownst to Hudson, is also keeping a close eye on her.

While Copycat generated a modest return at the box office, it has strong ratings amongst the Rotten Tomatoes audience. “Way ahead of its time, in my honest opinion,” writes one member. “Holly Hunter is a gem, and you can never go wrong with Sigourney Weaver. I don’t want to talk too much about the movie itself, so as not to ruin it for anyone who may read this review, but you will not regret taking a couple of hours out of your evening to give this classic a viewing.”

“A great cast with a decent script that keeps you entertained throughout its run time. Get your popcorn, enjoy the suspense and have a good time,” adds another.

Well, I know what I’m watching this weekend.

You can stream Copycat on Netflix.
