When it comes to crime dramas, the competition is fierce. From longtime staples like Law & Order: SVU and Criminal Minds to newcomers like Apple TV’s Smoke and Paramount+’s Mobland, there’s no shortage of gritty detectives and edge-of-your-seat plot twists. But, if we're being completely honest, some shows don’t make it past one season. (RIP to the flops we loved for two episodes.) That’s why it’s so impressive that Prime Video’s Ballard is not only surviving, but thriving.

Ballard stars Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, who’s leading the LAPD’s new cold case division. Think dusty files, long-forgotten crimes and a team made up of volunteers and reserve officers who are pretty much running on coffee and determination. It’s a thankless job, until they stumble on a chilling connection: 14 unsolved murders that might all be linked to a single killer.

The series is actually a spinoff of Bosch (Prime’s beloved detective drama that ran for seven seasons) but don’t let that fool you, Ballard is doing just fine on its own. In fact, just three days after its July 9 premiere, it shot to No. 1 on Prime Video’s Top 10 chart. That’s no easy feat, even with a strong franchise behind it. (Suits: LA, I'm looking at you.)

Even better? It currently holds a flawless 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans are loving it and the reactions are pure hype. “This was really good!!! PLUS, it’s always wonderful seeing my PRIME family from Bosch!!!” one fan wrote on a social post revealing Ballard's number one position. Another gushed, “ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT FIRST SEASON,” while someone else added, “AS IT SHOULD BE!!!! Now we need a renewal for season 2.”

No official word yet on a second season but with this kind of love? It’s probably just a matter of time. Until then, all 10 episodes of Ballard season one are streaming now on Prime Video.
