Just a year ago, my rose-tinted glasses were shattered when I watched Investigation Discovery's eye-opening documentaryQuiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which does a deep dive into the disturbing world of children’s television. Now, I've stumbled upon another wild exposé that pulls back the curtain on YouTube’s biggest kid influencers—and I'm almost certain it'll make parents think twice before letting their young kids become influencers.

Allow me to introduce Netflix's new docuseries, Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, which is now the eighth most-watched series on the streaming service. Directed by Jenna Rosher and Kief Davidson, the show explores YouTuber Piper Rockelle's meteoric rise to stardom, detailing how her momager, Tiffany Smith, built her daughter's platform and helped fellow child influencers (or rather, Piper's "squad") jumpstart their careers.

Although I've yet to see the three-part series, I did see the trailer, which teases a few candid interviews and revealing behind-the-scenes footage. And guys, I was left speechless after watching it with my mouth agape.

The trailer begins with a collection of seemingly harmless and fun videos of kids making viral content for YouTube, but then, in a voiceover, producer and actor Brandon Stewart clarifies that things weren't as amazing as they seemed. Referring to Piper's mom, he explains, "She took these kids to massive viral fame. It seemed so innocent. But it wasn't innocent at all."

Tall Girl star Ava Michelle then weighs in by saying that Smith would look for kids who wanted fame and would proceed to exploit them for clicks. She says, "Things can get very muddy when kids are making an obscene amount of money."

Another shocking revelation? Smith would allegedly blacklist kids who tried to leave the squad and launch hate campaigns against them.

While chatting with The Hollywood Reporter about the docuseries, Rosher said, "Unlike child actors who perform a part, these kids are confronted with these moments of having to perform but be themselves. We learned that there was a sort of identity crisis happening for a lot of them. Who am I? I don’t really feel this way, but I’m supposed to feel this way because it’s for a video. When you’re dealing with developing brains, that gets real tricky real quick. That was an aspect that I found very surprising."

The series features interviews with Smith's younger sister, Patience Rock Smith, her sister-in-law, Ashley Rock Smith, Rockelle's cousins, and other young content creators who collaborated with Smith.

Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing is now available to stream on Netflix.
