A harsh reality of life? You can work hard to win, but still end up losing.

That reality is one Amanda Seyfried is quite familiar with after her pursuit of the role of Glinda in Wicked. According to the Jennifer’s Body actress, she had to audition a grand total of six times for the part she ultimately didn’t end up getting. The 39-year-old star recently made an appearance on the In the Envelope podcast to discuss her career, and gave some insight into the Wicked audition process, noting how open she had been in the past about her desire to play the Good Witch.

"I auditioned, like, six times for Wicked because, you know, that had to be really just right, and I loved it," Seyfried told the hosts, adding, "I was busy. I barely had time to do it, but I made it work. I worked my ass off for years and years and years on that music. I'm just competitive with myself in a really healthy way."

And while Ariana Grande was the one who landed the role, Seyfried confirmed that she has no regrets or hard feelings about going out for the part. She told People magazine the same thing after a video of her singing “Popular” went viral on social media in late 2024. While many believed the clip was from her audition, she told the publication that it wasn’t.

“I think it was during COVID. I was doing a Lancôme shoot in Long Island City. Elizabeth Stewart was my stylist. I was not auditioning for ‘Wicked’ yet, but I knew it was like coming up,” she stated, adding, “ So I was just messing around really, and I was like, ‘This dress is so Glinda.’ And Elizabeth was like, ‘Do it.’ And then she posted at some point.”

She continued, “I went hard for that, for sure. And it was a very long process. And everything happens the way it’s meant to.”

Words of wisdom from Amanda Seyfried.
