My skin, for the most part, is pretty low-key. Sure, I get blemishes, the occasional smattering of clogged pores. But aside from the laugh lines I’m still learning to love, there’s not much else I’d openly complain about. Well, that is, until winter rolls around.

After a few months of below-freezing temps, baseboard heat and masking around the clock, my skin all but throws in the towel. It’s dull, dry, patchy, inflamed and eerily akin to a “before” photo you’d see on a late-night infomercial. Normally, I muscle through, slathering on cream after cream, feeling like an oil wick and hoping for a miracle. It wasn’t until I discovered the newest moisturizer from True Botanicals that I realized it was time for some extreme reinforcements.

I was immediately drawn to the ethos behind True Botanicals. The natural skincare brand is known for creating potent, powerful and sustainable products; free of harsh chemicals and fillers, full of high-quality plant-derived ingredients (so nothing but the good stuff). It puts biocompatibility first, setting the bar for the clean beauty industry with research-based formulas and clinically proven results. The brand has mastered multiple products, including cleansers, serums and vitamin-rich boosters. But the Chebula Extreme Cream is their first foray into moisturizer, and—in my opinion—it’s a total success.

As I unboxed the chic yet simple packaging, I was filled with both hope and minor skepticism. Extreme cream, eh? We’ll see about that. But after my first dip into the dark copper tub, that doubt disappeared (and was quickly replaced by shameless obsession). The soothing hydration was immediate upon application, but I couldn’t get over how my skin started to change over time. Like a nutrient-packed I.V. for your face, it provided round-the-clock hydration from morning to night. I woke up with brighter, smoother skin that felt like it had just gotten back from a day at the spa: nourished, balanced (and dare I say a smidge more youthful?).

Instead of the usual pore-clogging waxes most heavy-duty formulas rely on, the Chebula Extreme Cream is made with Calendula oil and Wild Pansy extract, along with two powerful antioxidants—Acerola Cherry and Chebula—that aim to prevent free radical damage and combat the five major signs of aging, including dryness, firmness, fine lines, texture and radiance.

So, as it turns out, the “extreme” moniker wasn’t just hyperbole and I’ve officially hitched my ride to the True Botanicals bandwagon. Next on my list of must-try products? The Phyto-Retinol Vitamin A Booster that Laura Dern calls an "anti-aging miracle.” If it’s good enough for Renata Klein
