A Celebrity Colorist’s Favorite Fall Hair Hues (Psst, They’re All Super Wearable)

As soon as the first cold snap rolls around, we inevitably get the urge to change up our hair (even when Venus retrograde tells us we shouldn’t). And while there are plenty of bolder trends floating around, sometimes we’re just looking for a way to give our natural color a little oomph. Fortunately, Min Kim—celebrity colorist, balayage educator and a member of PureWow’s Coterie—has just the recipe for a seasonal pick-me-up: five rich, wearable hues that are almost good enough to eat.

7 Celebrity Hair Transformations That Surprised Us This Year

Vanilla Blonde

The fairest hues are moving away from ash and gray undertones to a (slightly) warmer vanilla tint. “This works best for the lightest natural blondes and is easier to live with, since a gloss or toner isn't necessary to maintain,” Kim says.

Milk And Honey Blonde

“Ask for highlights to be painted on the midlengths and ends with a few face framing pieces.”  Kim especially likes this combo for fine hair, since the color contrast creates the illusion of texture and volume.

Butterscotch Blonde

“For those on the darker and warmer side of blonde, ask for highlights ranging from butter to butterscotch with the brightest pieces around the face,” Min suggests. Bonus: This uber-flattering combination works on all skin tones.

Ginger Spice

Intrigued by the majorly trending copper shades, but worried it’ll overpower you? “Ask your colorist for more of a ‘whispering’ than ‘screaming’ copper to keep it more modern and elegant,” Kim says.

Chocolate Kisses

Brunettes don’t have to give up the dark side to get in on the fall trends. For a subtle (but still gorgeous) change, ask for lighter, warmer highlights just on the tips to give a “kiss” of color that adds dimension while keeping the base rich.

“Above all else, fall hair color is about shine and health,” says Kim. Make sure to use products that protect your color and keep hair moisturized.
