You’re having a bad day. Whether your kids are screaming or you have back-to-back-to-back meetings, you’re stressed way (way) out. To relax, you could try some deep-breathing exercises or you could go for a quick walk.
Or…you could play a single song that’s scientifically proven to reduce your stress by 65 percent.
Sound too good to be true? It’s not. A group of neuroscientists at Mindlab International found that study participants who listened to one song—“Weightless” by a group called Marconi Union—experienced a 65 percent decrease in overall anxiety and a 35 percent decrease in their usual physiological resting rates.
What’s even cooler is that the song was actually created with stress reduction in mind. The group worked with sound therapists to arrange the harmonies, rhythms and bass lines to help slow listeners’ heart rates, reduce blood pressure and lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone.
So the next time you’re freaking out and everything’s the worst, pop in your earbuds, crank up the volume and feel exponentially more Zen in just eight minutes.
