4 Unexpected Ways to Get an Instant Energy Boost
When you’re feeling tired in the middle of the day, you reach for a cup of joe, right? Today after lunch, forget the coffee run. Try these four totally unexpected (read: kind of weird) ways to instantly boost your energy instead.
Do a Handstand
OK, so this might look kind of weird if you work in a stuffy office, but standing on your head is a terrific way to wake up instantly—the blood suddenly rushing to your brain has an immediate energizing effect. And that’s just one of the many positive effects of hanging out upside down every now and then. (Yep, it’s totally fine to use a wall for balance.)
Stare at a Something Red
It seems weird, but a study published in Journal of the Association for the Advancement of Science found that the color red is associated with self-confidence and might stimulate excitement. So Google Image search “fire-engine red” or stare at your favorite lipstick and you’ll be ready to keep crushing it.
Science! Chewing gum (preferably mint) stimulates the autonomic nervous system, which increases alertness. Chewing also increases blood flow to the brain, which has a similar effect to those handstands we talked about above.
Buy Someone a Cup of Coffee
Or any random act of kindness, really. This isn’t really scientific, but when we do something nice for someone (it can be as simple as holding the door for a stranger or complimenting a coworker on her blouse), we feel an immediate sense of satisfaction, which translates into energy. Plus, good karma.
