Hey, we’ve wanted to talk to you about this for a while, but we needed to find the right time. (Deep breath.) Here it is: You can make caramel apples at home. Forget those mass-produced behemoths you usually go for at the county fair or town carnival and try our delightful--and extremely easy--recipe. We use miniature lady apples, which are easier to prepare as well as eat, and make the caramel from store-bought candies. All that’s really left to do is dip those babies in the sauce, take a bite and pat yourself on the back.

Ingredients

10 lady apples (or other small apple variety)

10 lollipop sticks

One 12-ounce bag caramel candies, unwrapped

1 tablespoon heavy cream

½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Pinch of cinnamon

Directions

1. Wash and dry the apples well, then place them on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper.

2. Insert the lollipop sticks into the apples on the stem end, pushing each halfway into the apple. (If you need to remove any stems, just twist until they come out.)

3. In a large, heat-safe bowl, combine the caramel candies with the heavy cream, vanilla extract and cinnamon. Microwave in 20-second intervals for 2 minutes, stirring between each round, until the caramels are fully melted and the mixture is combined.

4. Holding an apple by the stick, dip the apple three-quarters of the way into the caramel. Remove the apple from the caramel and hold it over the bowl for a few seconds, allowing the excess to drip off. Place the apple back onto the waxed-paper-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining apples. Let the caramel set for 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature, then transfer the apples to a platter and serve.
