caramelized onion grilled cheese
Emily Morgan

There are a handful of food combinations that make our tastebuds dance and caramelized onions and pears is one of them. It’s slightly sweet, a little savory and downright delicious. For this upscale grilled cheese, layer caramelized onions, fresh pears and Gruyère cheese between two slices of Sara Lee® Artesano™ Potato Bakery Bread and cook in a skillet until its melted to gooey perfection.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

½ medium onion, thinly sliced

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 slices Sara Lee Artesano Potato Bread, 20oz

4 slices Gruyère cheese (or enough to evenly cover two slices of bread)

1 small pear, quartered and sliced thinly

Whole-grain mustard, for dipping

Directions

1. Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, and cook until soft and golden, reducing heat if they start to brown too quickly, 20 to 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and transfer to a bowl.

2. Return the skillet to medium heat. Spread on one slice of the bread. Place the bread mayo-side-down in the skillet. Carefully layer a slice of cheese, the pear, caramelized onions and more cheese. Top with the second slice of bread, and spread the remaining mayonnaise on top. Cook until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted, flipping as needed, about 8 minutes.
