Every Superhero (and Supervillain) Movie Coming to Theaters in the Next 3 Years

From Wonder Woman 1984 to Black Widow, it’s no easy task keeping track of the plethora of superhero movies that are currently in development. So, we compiled a complete list of every major comic book adaptation that is scheduled to hit theaters within the next three years.

Release Date: October 4, 2019

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, Frances Conroy, Glenn Fleshler, Shea Whigham and Bill Camp

The origin movie will take place in the ’80s and show viewers how the Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) became the mastermind criminal we love to hate. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) will write and direct the movie, with Scott Silver (The Finest Hours) serving as a co-writer.

2. 'birds Of Prey'

Release Date: February 7, 2020

Cast: Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina and Ewan McGregor

The film will follow Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) as she ditches her Suicide Squad gang for a new crew. If the first-look trailer is any indication, the movie will take us for one hell of a ride.

3. 'the New Mutants'

Release Date: April 3, 2020

Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga

If you enjoyed X-Men, then you’ll love this young adult version, which is written and directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars). Although it was originally supposed to premiere in April 2018, Fox pushed it back after deciding it “wasn’t scary enough.”

4. 'black Widow'

Release Date: May 1, 2020

Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour

Scarlett Johansson nabbed a $15 million payday for this flick, which is Black Widow’s first-ever standalone movie. The actress handpicked Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) to direct the movie, along with Jac Schaeffer (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure), who will pen the script.

5. 'wonder Woman 1984'

Release Date: June 5, 2020

Cast: Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig, Chris Pine and Pedro Pascal

Very little is known about the highly anticipated sequel, though Patty Jenkins will return to direct the film. Oh, and did we mention that Kristen Wiig will play the villainous Cheetah (aka Barbara Minerva)?

Release Date: November 6, 2020

Cast: Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie

Based on the comic book series by Jack Kirby, the Chloé Zhao-directed movie will follow a group of immortal beings. The all-star cast speaks for itself.

7. 'doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness'

Release Date: May 7, 2021

Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen

Now that Benedict Cumberbatch has wrapped Avengers: Endgame, the actor is focusing his attention on the Doctor Strange follow-up. According to director Scott Derrickson, the sequel will be “the first scary MCU film.” Gulp.

8. 'the Batman'

Release Date: June 25, 2021

Cast: Robert Pattinson

After Warner Bros. spent years trying to convince Ben Affleck to star in a standalone Batman movie, the studio zoned in on an all-new prospect: Robert Pattinson. The Twilight star will play a younger version of the iconic character, so prepare for swarms of thirsty women.

9. 'the Suicide Squad'

Release Date: August 8, 2021

Cast: Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman

OK, it’s important to point out that the upcoming movie will serve more as a reboot than a sequel, unlike Birds of Prey. Nevertheless, James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy 3) will pen the script and potentially direct the film, according to Collider.

10. 'thor: Love And Thunder'

Release Date: November 5, 2021

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson

Back in July, Marvel announced that Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) will become the first-ever female Thor. Even better, Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) will return to write and direct the film.

11. 'aquaman 2'

Release Date: December 16, 2022

Cast: Jason Momoa and Amber Heard

Warner Bros. hasn’t released any details about the plot, though we do know that James Wan will return to direct the sequel alongside David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who will write the screenplay.
