We’ve been trying to avoid it, but the sad truth is that Transparent is officially coming to an end. And while our denial was working for a little while, Amazon just released the series finale teaser trailer, and we have a ton of feelings.
It was back in October of last year when series creator Jill Soloway announced via The New York Times that season five would be the show’s last. It was also here that we learned a little something extra about the finale: The final episode would be a two-hour musical extravaganza.
Released Wednesday, the clip opens with the news that Maura Pfefferman (Jeffrey Tambor) has died. The Pfeffermans are told the news by Davina (Alexandra Billings), and the family is left to pick up the pieces and cope with the devastating loss.
As the trailer continues, there is a shift over to multiple musical numbers, performed by a variety of cast members.
With original music by Faith Soloway, the finale, which will be released on the streaming service in September, features Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker, Jay Duplass, Kathryn Hahn, Shakina Nayfack and Trace Lysette, as well as a number of fan favorite characters.
And this may not be the end of the Emmy-nominated series completely. Soloway has previously revealed plans to take Transparent to Broadway in the form of a stage musical.
We’ll miss you, Pfeffermans. Now bring on the song and dance.
