Long-Lost Footage of Princess Diana Breaking Royal Protocol in a Mother’s Day Race Is the Motivation We Need Today

If there’s one thing we all know about Princess Diana, it’s that her kids (Prince William and Prince Harry) were the part of her life that truly made her light up. But it appears they also triggered her competitive side. In recently uncovered footage from 1991, Princess Diana participates in a Mother’s Day run at Prince William’s school—and, make no mistake: Di’s #1 goal is to win.

The video clip—which first made the rounds on Twitter—shows Princess Diana barefoot and dressed in a blazer and midi skirt as she runs like the wind against the other “mums” at a Sports Day organized for the parents at the Wetherby School in London.

And here’s what’s so great about it. Forget the fact that royals typically act a certain way. Diana doesn’t seem to care about protocol in the slightest. Instead, she’s in it to win it—and royal rumor has it she actually came pretty close. (Supposedly, she placed second overall.)

Apparently, this also isn’t the first time Princess Diana participated in a race at the boys’ school. In 1988, she came in first. In 1989, she placed second. And in 1990, she placed 3rd, according to archival photos on Getty Images.

In England, Sports Day is an annual tradition with most of the relay events being for the kids. The final race of the day gives a chance for the kids’ parents to jump in.

Princess Diana, sitting on the sidelines? Come on, she would never. And that’s what we loved most about her.
