The '80s are back, baby! At least one particular '80s earring trend is back: button earrings. The oversize style, loved by Princess Diana, was spotted in multiple fall '19 collections including Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. Luckily, it looks like the royally-approved earrings have trickled down to more affordable brands as well so we can all stock up on these fresh statement pieces.

While Diana appears to have preferred giant pearls, sometimes set in a ring of gold, button earrings actually come in a variety of materials, colors and shapes.

The best way to wear them? Treat them as you would any other statement earrings and keep other pieces of jewelry to a minimum (there’s no need to add a necklace to the mix when you’re wearing baubles as attention-grabbing as these). We also suggest avoiding wearing them with structured blazers or suits to prevent looking too much like an ’80s film character. Instead, try pairing them with a boho prairie dress or distressed jeans and a relaxed-fit button down.

This is one trend that lends itself particularly well to vintage and secondhand shopping (or raiding your mom’s, aunt’s and grandma’s jewelry boxes), but if you’d rather snap up a brand-new pair, here are seven of the best button earrings to help you get ahead of the trend.
