Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s Daughter Has a Special Tie to Princess Charlotte

We’re still beaming after learning that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle named their daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, after two royal family members: Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. But what you might not realize is the newborn now shares a special connection with her cousin, Princess Charlotte.

It all started when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed that they not only welcomed their second child together, but they also paid tribute to the baby’s grandma and great grandma with her name. (“Lilibet” honors the queen’s nickname, while “Diana” is an homage to the late royal.)

While it’s a pretty big deal, Prince Harry and Markle aren’t the first to do something like this. Back in 2015, Prince William and Kate Middleton welcomed their daughter and named her Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

It’s extremely common for members of the royal family to name their babies after the reigning monarch. In fact, several of Queen Elizabeth’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren inherited the moniker. For example, Princess Anne’s full name is Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise. Her daughter is named Zara Anne Elizabeth Tindall, followed by her granddaughter, Lena Elizabeth.

Many believe that if Princess Beatrice (whose middle name is Elizabeth Mary) has a girl, she will be named after Queen Elizabeth. But if it’s a boy, we wouldn’t be surprised to see “Philip,” just like Princess Eugenie’s son, August Philip Hawke.

Now all we need is for Princess Charlotte and Lilibet to meet in person.
