Could Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Really Move to America? We Asked the Experts

It’s no secret that Meghan Markle is struggling to adjust to her new role as Prince Harry’s wife. While many believe the royal couple are considering a permanent hop across the pond, our expert says otherwise.

Here’s what you need to know: Several tabloids recently claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could potentially move to North America—like the U.S. or Canada—in an attempt to escape ongoing scrutiny.

While we’re admittedly giddy about the possibility of spotting a royal in the wild, we recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Kaitlin Menza (royal expert and co-host of the podcast Royally Obsessed), who revealed that it’s unlikely.

“I really don’t see it happening,” she said. “I was intrigued to hear Harry discuss his desire to live in South Africa during the recent documentary, but he admitted to the difficulties it would pose to their work. The U.S. offers very different difficulties than South Africa, of course. But as a British royal who undergoes sometimes thrice-weekly charitable visits around the U.K., I don’t know how he could live across the pond.”

Menza went on to explain how the hypothetical move would affect the Duke of Sussex, adding, “I believe Prince Harry wants to have a great impact on the world. I am truly convinced he wants to make a difference. And unfortunately, the ability to do so requires ongoing public attention—not a calmer, quieter life in, say, Southern California.”

This means the chances of Prince Harry and Markle permanently leaving the U.K. are slim to none. Still, we asked Menza about the potential ramifications, and it sounds like a headache.

“This kind of move to the United States under these circumstances is unprecedented, so it’s tough to say,” she continued. “Prince Harry would have to abdicate, if the word even applies to someone further down the line of succession. Or I suppose the queen could strip him of his title, though both cases seem a little dramatic and thus unlikely.”

The staff at Frogmore Cottage must be relieved.
