Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Are Making Major Changes to the Way They Deal with the Press
Shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they’re stepping down as “senior” members of the royal family, the couple updated their website, SussexRoyal.com, to help answer the hundreds of questions to follow.
In particular, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed they’re implementing a revised media strategy to ensure “open access to their work.” So, will Markle now be able to welcome journalists into her home? And will she and Prince Harry be allowed to attend international events—like the Oscars, perhaps?
Here’s everything you need to know about the couple’s new approach.
1. What does it mean?
The main difference is Prince Harry and Markle will be able to do interviews and attend events—both local and international—without the consent of the royal family. According to their official website, the couple wants to “invite specialist media to specific events/engagements to give greater access to their cause-driven activities, widening the spectrum of news coverage.”
2. Will it affect Meghan's acting career?
It won’t. In fact, it will only help it. Now that she’s no longer a “senior” member of the royal family, Markle could return to acting.
You see, typical actresses regularly go on press tours, do interviews and promote their projects. Since joining the royal family, Markle hasn’t been able to engage with the press like she did when she was starring on Suits.
So, whether she returns to the small screen or not, the couple’s new media approach will widen Markle’s access to the public. Not only will she be able to do one-on-one interviews, but she’ll also have the opportunity to welcome journalists into her home, which can only mean one thing: more Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
3. Why'd they do it?
It all comes down to two words: “financial independence.” Prince Harry and Markle claim that’s their ultimate goal, which is why many believe the duchess will return to work. Still, the couple’s website makes it seem like they were restricted by the royal family, and this new approach will allow them to address the public of their own accord.
“The Duke and Duchess have chosen to revise their media policy to reflect both their forthcoming change as members of the Royal Family with financial independence, and their wish to reshape and broaden access to their work,” the website reads.
4. Are live TV events (like the Oscars) totally out of the question?
Not completely, but it will be a while before Prince Harry and Markle can accept any red-carpet invites. The couple needs to solidify their new roles within the royal family—only then will they decide where they want to live. After things settle down, it’s very possible we could see the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at events like the Oscars and the Emmys in the future.
