PureWow sat down for an exclusive interview with Myka Meier, royals expert and author of Modern Etiquette Made Easy, who dished on the shocking announcement and what it means for the British line of succession.
In the clip, Meier reveals that she’s not surprised by Prince Harry and Markle’s decision to break from their royal duties. “I honestly think this has been a long time coming,” she says. “They said it themselves—this is something that they were thinking about and with the positive encouragement of people around the world, they felt it was time to take this step.”
The royal expert also says that she doesn’t think it will affect the line of succession (at least not yet). “For the line of succession, I don’t think we’ll quite know yet,” she adds. “I think my prediction is it will stay as it is for the time being because at this point, they still have their titles. It’s not like they’ve given up their titles, they’re just not being senior royal members in terms for their work.”
Meier goes on to confirm our suspicions about Markle’s potential return to acting, adding, “Stepping down as a senior royal means there are other opportunities financially that will open. For instance, will Meghan go back to work? Will she begin acting again? We know that’s one of her biggest passions.”
The author concludes by commending the couple on their decision: “Regardless of what people feel about it, it was a very brave decision that would have taken a lot from them. And it’s a big move. It’s never been done before.”
