Meghan Markle Just Jetted Off on a Solo Trip to New York to Watch Serena Williams in the U.S. Open Finals

Believe it or not, Meghan Markle is set to make her first post-maternity-leave royal appearance next Thursday—but she’s making the most of her free time until then.  

Case in point? The 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex reportedly hopped on a last-minute commercial flight from London to New York so she could watch her close friend Serena Williams play in the U.S. Open Finals at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens on Saturday.

Markle opted to make the trip without husband Prince Harry and 4-month-old son Archie Mountbatten Windsor, who are expected to remain home at their Frogmore Cottage in Windsor.

According to The Times, which broke the story, Markle will return home at the end of the weekend and prepare to get back for work. A source (remember to always take source quotes with a grain of salt) told the paper, “It is a last-minute trip,” noting that Markle is “excited to support her friend, and then come back.”

Williams will face off against Canadian tennis pro Bianca Andreescu in hopes of winning her 24^th Grand Slam and making history as the winningest female tennis player in the process.

The jaunt across the pond marks the duchess’s first trip to New York since Williams and several other close friends hosted her baby shower there pre-Archie in February of this year. The news comes just after it was reported that Markle and Prince Harry, 34, would not be making the trip to Balmoral Castle to spend time with Queen Elizabeth this summer. The couple has been busy getting ready for their tour of Africa and the release of Markle’s capsule collection, which will benefit her patronage Smart Works.
