In the clip, Markle reveals that she turned down previous interview requests from Oprah, who originally reached out before the 2018 royal wedding.
“You said, ‘I’m sorry, it’s not the right time,’” Oprah says. To which Markle responds, “Well, I remember that conversation very well. I wasn’t even allowed to have that conversation with you personally, right? There had to be people from the comm., sitting there.”
The Duchess of Sussex explains that (as a senior royal) she wasn’t allowed to speak her truth, adding, “I couldn’t have said ‘yes’ to you then, that wasn’t my choice to make.”
However, things are different now that Markle is living in Montecito, California, with Prince Harry and their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
She continues, “So as an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is different than I think what people imagine it to be, it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say ‘yes.’ I mean, I’m ready to talk. To be able to make a choice on your own and just be able to speak for yourself.”
One thing’s for sure: We can’t wait to watch the full interview. Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special will air on Sunday, March 7, at 8 p.m. ET.
