Is Meghan Markle bound for the White House? Not likely, but it’s certainly not beyond the realm of possibility. And looking back at the past few years, her actions could definitely align with the potential of getting into politics.
According to a new report from Vanity Fair, the Duchess of Sussex might even be ambitious enough to do it. It seems American politics were a huge factor in Markle wanting to remain a U.S. citizen after she became a member of a royal family. “One of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics,” a source told the outlet. It’s true, she technically is eligible to run if she wanted to. Not only does she still retain her citizenship but she is also American-born.
And that’s not the only sign that she’s possibly suited for the presidency. Her and Harry’s decision to step down also could have something to do with wanting to make the change. Sure, they decided they wanted to live their lives outside of the royal spotlight (not to mention, the British tabloids weren’t always kind to the duchess). However, a major rule as a member of the royal family is absolutely no political talk. This could have been difficult for Markle, who has always been vocal about justice and what she believes in.
While the possibility of a future political run seems unlikely, there’s no denying Markle has a potential knack for it. Since she gave up her official duties, she’s wasted no time jumping into politics, specifically surrounding voter advocacy. In fact, in the last week alone she made headlines twice regarding the importance of voting in the upcoming election—the first by cold-calling voters and again during TIME 100 TV Special.
