King Charles and Queen Camilla were all smiles on Sunday as they attended a church service at Crathie Kirk.

The happy couple was photographed driving away in a cheerful mood, with Queen Camilla even taking a moment to wave to fans and photographers from their black Audi as they were leaving. The royals are frequent attendees of Crathie Kirk, a small parish church in the Scottish village of Crathie, which itself is best known for being the British royal family’s regular place of worship when they are staying at Balmoral Castle.

The church outing came just a few days after King Charles’s emotional six-minute speech to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15. The 76-year-old's pre-recorded message paid homage to the VJ Day heroes, saying that they “gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected.” He added, “In times of war and in times of peace, the greatest weapons of all are not the arms you bear, but the arms you link.”

On Friday, the King and Queen joined Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and  33 veterans who served in East Asia and the Pacific for the national service of remembrance held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. During the ceremony, Yavar Abbas, a former captain in the 11th Sikh Regiment, took a minute to acknowledge King Charles’s battle with cancer. “I make no apologies for briefly going off the script to salute my brave King, who is here with his beloved Queen in spite of the fact that he is under treatment for cancer.” The acknowledgement made Queen Camilla tear up, and drew applause from the crowd.

He continued, “I salute him for gracing this occasion, because by his presence here, he has gone a long way to make sure that his grandad’s Fourteenth Army is never given the sobriquet again of ‘the forgotten army’.”

It was another monumental weekend for the royal family.
