It’s not every day that King Charles shares a personal note, but June 12 was one of those rare—and deeply somber—moments. The monarch took to social media to address two separate tragedies that occurred on the same day, offering condolences and support in the wake of heartbreaking events.

The first message came after a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, where an Air India flight carrying 242 passengers went down. According to the Associated Press, local officials stated there were no known survivors and the crash also caused casualties on the ground as the aircraft collided with nearby buildings.

“My wife and I have been desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning,” King Charles began. “Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by the appalling tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones.”

He went on to praise the first responders, adding, “I would like to pay a particular tribute to the heroic efforts of the emergency services and all those providing help and support at this most heartbreaking and traumatic time.” He signed the note with a simple, formal “Charles R.”

Just hours earlier, the King had issued another statement following a tragic school shooting in Austria at the Dreierschützengasse school in Graz.

“Schools should be places of sanctuary and learning, which makes this horrific attack on students and staff all the more dreadful,” he wrote. “Our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those affected by this terrible loss of life and injury. We send our deepest sympathy to all Austrians at this profoundly distressing time.”

He closed the message with his handwritten signature.

Sending condolensces to everyone impacted by these unimaginable tragedies.
