King Charles is honoring the life and legacy of Pope Francis, who passed away at age 88 on April 21 after a long battle with pneumonia. In a message released by Buckingham Palace on behalf of both himself and Queen Camilla, the King reflected on the Pope’s compassion, faith and global impact.
“My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis,” the statement began. “Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry.”
The King went on to praise the Pope’s lifelong commitment to unity, faith and environmental stewardship. “His belief that care for Creation is an existential expression of faith in God resounded with so many across the world,” he wrote. “Through his work and care for both people and planet, he profoundly touched the lives of so many.”
