This year’s event kicked off on June 17, bringing all the usual fanfare: horse racing, fancy hats and deep royal roots dating back centuries. It’s one of the crown jewels of the British summer social season—and many were expecting to see the Princess of Wales there. In fact, she was officially listed to ride in the royal carriage procession on Day Two of the races. But at the last minute, she pulled out.

Kensington Palace hasn’t commented on the reason for the change, but outlets including The Times and Vanity Fair confirmed Princess Catherine's absence was a late decision. Prince William rode instead with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Clearly her absence speaks volumes about her priorities, and she's smartly putting herself and her health first. Sources close to the Princess of Wales say she was disappointed to miss the day but she’s still in the process of easing back into public life after undergoing cancer treatment earlier this year.

“She would have loved to be there,” a friend shared with Vanity Fair. “It’s always a fun day out. But the UK is going through a heatwave, and she’s trying to pace herself.”
