Kate Middleton Is Keeping the Royal Family Together Like "Glue," According to a New Interview

Things have not exactly been easy for the royal family lately. At the beginning of April, the royal patriarch, Prince Philip, passed away only a few months shy of his 100th birthday. Meanwhile, just a month prior, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle held a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they made some shocking claims about their experiences as royals.

While these events caused a supposed rift between brothers Prince William and Prince Harry, and the whole royal family has been under more scrutiny, it seems that Kate Middleton is the one holding everything together.

During an episode of 60 Minutes Australia, royal reporter Katie Nicholl of Vanity Fair shared that the Duchess of Cambridge has been trying to fill the spot left by Prince Philip. “I think Kate is the glue," she said. “In the same way that the Duke of Edinburgh was always the one who would help resolve family issues. He was the patriarch of the family. I see Kate stepping into that role. Trying to keep things together.”

While Middleton had less of a central role in her early years as a royal, Nicholl said: “Now, with ten years of royal service under her belt, we are hearing from her more, we are seeing more of her. The royal family realized they have a really important key player here and they're bringing her center stage, so we have seen a shift.”

Part of this shift was due to the impact of the coronavirus. Nicholl explained, “The lockdown that we experienced here, in many ways, was the unlocking of Kate. I think the public got to see more of the true duchess than they've ever been able to see before.” She added, “We got access to [the royals] in a way that we absolutely hadn't before, and I think a lot of that was down to William and Kate recognizing that they couldn't be seen to be in their ivory tower. They needed to be accessible.”

Nicholl believes the future of the monarchy will rely on this accessibility and relatability. She says, “The real future of the monarchy, the longevity of the monarchy lies in William and Kate.”
