Here’s the Real Story Behind Jason Momoa’s Now-Famous Oscar Scrunchie

Jason Momoa turned heads on Sunday during the Oscars red carpet for many reasons. Besides looking incredibly handsome (as always), the 39-year-old actor caught the attention of many with a tiny pink scrunchie that he wore on his right wrist.

As it turns out, the meaning behind the (now) famous hair piece is pretty significant. Thanks to the Aquaman actor’s YouTube channel, we got a glimpse of that story and a behind-the-scenes look at his big Oscar debut.

After starting the day off with an impressive outdoor climbing session (of course), Momoa got his first ever manicure and gave us a first look at his custom suit. The idea for the design came after one of his hairstylists gifted him a velvet scrunchie. From there, Los Angeles–based stylist Jeanne Yang sent ideas over to Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi, who then sent sketches and flew in the pieces for a fitting.

“You know how Prince has purple?” said Yang. “Jason has pink.”

The fitting took place on the Saturday before Mr. Lagerfeld passed. Which means the light pink velvet suit (and scrunchie) just may have been the last personalized pieces Karl Lagerfeld worked on.

“It’s an honor, though I wish I would have met him,” Momoa said in the clip. “He’s a badass.”

Now that’s one special scrunchie.
