Charli D’Amelio Takes the Mirrorball Trophy in ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 31

It’s time to give a huge congrats to Charli D’Amelio and Mark Ballas as they were just crowned the winners of Dancing with the Stars Season 31.

Both winners took home the shiny mirrorball trophy during the finale, bringing an end to the first season of the show to move completely from ABC to the parent company’s streaming service, Disney+. Although D’Amelio and Ballas fought hard during the final night against fellow contestants Wayne Brady, Witney Carson, Gabby Windey, Val Chmerkovskiy, Shangela and Gleb Savchenko, their big win wasn't without some Twitter controversy.

Windey and Chmerkovskiy claimed second place in the competition with a perfect score on their redemption jive and cha-cha. Brady and Carson came in third place and Shangela and Savchenko came in fourth, both with quickstep routines.

For one of the final numbers, D’Amelio and Ballas danced to “Grown” by Little Mix and completely blew the judges (and all of us) away with their dazzling performance, which earned them a perfect score. “Charli, that was remarkable,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba. “You have proven yourself so incredible this whole season. This is you, you just danced with your heart.”

The freestyle round saw Windey dance to Chicago’s “Cell Block Tango” and Shangela to “Survivor” and “Call Me Mother”—with a special appearance by Savchenko’s drag persona.

D’Amelio and her dance partner dazzled the audience, where they danced to the beat of “Us Again” by Pinar Toprak and received a perfect score. “I know what it’s like to lose the love of dance,” said Derek Hough, fully overcome with tears. “That was so powerful, the storytelling, the narrative, but more importantly you two, the connection.”

While the judges were won over by D’Amelio’s performance (with good reason), the Internet had mixed reactions.

“‘The winners are...Charli and Mark.’ OMG who woulda thought??” wrote Twitter user @yeeyee006 (alongside a video clip that made it clear their Tweet should be read as exasperated sarcasm).

Meanwhile, user @Junebuglllll shared their less-than-enthused final thoughts on the season's winners and losers: “Gabby grew into a beautiful dancer. Charli was handed the trophy since day 1. Shangela was robbed! Goodnight.”

Despite the noise on Twitter, it’s clear that D’Amelio brought her A-game to the final dance. Congratulations on your big win, Charli and Mark!
