Imagine a world where Chip and Joanna Gaines never became HGTV stars. Well, that nightmare was almost a reality.

On last night’s “How We Got Here” episode of Fixer Upper, the home-renovation duo took a trip down memory lane and revealed that they almost didn’t get the job as the show’s hosts.

Yes, that’s actual footage of Chip trying to convince Joanna to move their family into a houseboat during renovations. With those hijinks, how could HGTV not give them a show?

Joanna, you handled that way better than we would’ve. Oh, and Chip? Never change.
