Supermodel, girl crush and body-positive inspiration Ashley Graham took yet another giant step for female-kind by speaking her truth on the term plus-size and sharing her preferred nomenclature, curve or curvy.
The social media sensation sat down with New York Magazine for its August 7 issue to discuss her role as judge on the new America’s Next Top Model and her successful career as a cover star for Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Edition, Vogue, Cosmopolitan and about 50 other notable magazines. NBD.
Regarding her career as a “plus-size model,” Graham explained she dislikes the phrase because it infers a divide between conventional body types and the “other.”
“It’s like, ‘Plus what?’ That’s something I’ve always been told: You’re not good enough because you’re plus-size,” the brunette bombshell shared. Though she prefers the terms curve or curvy over plus-size (e.g.: Ashley Graham is a celebrated curve model), she’s also quick to clarify that she’s not trying to erase plus-size entirely from our vernacular because plenty of women own it and love it. Preach!
With classic Graham confidence she continued, “…I know I’m paving the way for the next generation of girls, and they’re not going to have to do this…I’ll take the brunt work and just handle it, and then you guys can just sail right on through.” Ashley Graham for class president.
Spoken like a true Queen of Curve. Brava, Ashley, brava.
