The 1 Thing You Need to Do Right This Second (if You Plan on Renovating)

Regardless of how soon you'll actually be renovating your dated kitchen/bath/whatever, the time to get started on sourcing materials is now, according to interior designer Gabriela Gargano. Your homework? Start joining mailing lists.

That's right: Gargano suggests setting yourself up for success ASAP—because it'll definitely save you money down the road.

Say, for example, you're obsessed with trendy mermaid tiles. Do some Pinterest, dream-browsing, find out where you can buy 'em, and then subscribe to those email lists. This advice applies to niche companies like Fireclay Tile but also to mass suppliers, like Wayfair's huge home reno department. "Most retailers have one or two big blowout sales every year," explains Gargano. This way, you'll be the first to know about them—and you can jump on purchasing to get the best price.

Another idea? "Call up customer service and ask if they have leftovers from any recent orders!" she says. "It's a great way to save money without sacrificing quality."
