You’ve painted the walls a bright white semigloss, de-cluttered with the fervor of Kondo and even treated yourself to a beautiful new mirror. Yet your small living space still feels so...small.

Rather than accepting defeat, instead consider this simple, two-minute swap: move your mirror so it’s directly opposite a window.

We all know that the addition of a big, shiny mirror does God’s work when it comes to making a space feel airier, brighter and more open. But placing it parallel to a window (as opposed to hanging it adjacent to a window) will draw in the most natural light possible, bounce around the most light and, best of all, mimic the outdoor views in its reflection.

Bonus tip: For small spaces, opt for a mirror with a long silhouette, like a vertical rectangle or tall oval. These shapes will draw the eye upward and create the illusion of height.

Think of this trick as “blasting” a whole new window through an interior wall—no renovation necessary.
