Subway’s Fresh Fit Menu Has 4 New Sandwiches (& I Tasted Them All to Bring You This Ranking)

Low in cals, high in protein

subway fresh fit menu review: subway fresh fit menu sandwiches
Subway

As the child of two former bodybuilders, I ate a lot of Subway as a kid. I always went the customizable route—turkey, American, tomato, mayo, salt and pepper on white or tuna and banana peppers or jalapeños on wheat, in case you’re wondering. While these nostalgic sandwiches never fail me, I went back for something different this month.

Subway’s famous Fresh Fit Menu returned in September after a six-year hiatus. The menu features four six-inch, veggie-heavy sammies, each high in protein and less than 500 calories. To find out if they’re worth switching up my usual for, I tasted them all to bring you the following honest reviews, original photos and overall ranking. Read on to find out my favorite of the lot.

4. Grilled Chicken & Avocado (35g Protein)

  • What It Is: grilled chicken, avocado, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and Baja chipotle sauce on toasted hearty multigrain bread
  • Price: $10

This number is allegedly made with 50 percent more grilled chicken, according to the chain. I’m curious what a standard portion is, because the meat here basically only lined the hinge of the bread. The avocado spread had an authentic, buttery texture and a mild, slightly earthy flavor. The grilled chicken was soft, tender and well salted. In terms of appearance, it reminded me a lot of the precooked Tyson grilled chicken strips my mom always used to keep in the fridge. I think the onion brought much-needed crispness to the sandwich, along with a sharp punch. The tomato and avocado turned the bread soggy rather quickly though, so eat up if you order this one.

3. Ham & Turkey Stacker (20g Protein)

  • What It Is: oven-roasted turkey, Black Forest ham, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and yellow mustard on hearty multigrain bread
  • Price: $8

I’m admittedly not a ham person, but the portions here were much better than that of the grilled chicken. It felt like a full-size sandwich because of the double meat. I really enjoyed the wheaty, rustic notes of the bread with these two proteins, too. I would’ve preferred a split of mayo and mustard, but I get that the intent of the Fresh Fit Menu is to keep the calories to a minimum, so I see why they didn’t. Cucumbers and tomatoes felt like a strange pairing for ham, but it was certainly piled high with veggies, if that’s a plus to you.

2. Seasoned Steak & Avocado (35g Protein)

  • What It Is: shaved steak, avocado, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes and red onion on toasted hearty multigrain bread
  • Price: $10

It’s supposed to get 50 percent more shaved steak than usual, but I found this protein portion to be particularly meager compared to the others. That said, the meat was tender and well-seasoned, sort of like cheesesteak meat but less oniony. My sandwich came with one deviation: The sandwich artist also added some sort of spicy spread (I’m guessing the Baja chipotle sauce) even though it doesn’t typically come with it, but I wasn’t mad at it. The avocado is meant to be the “sauce” here, adding creaminess and healthy fats, but the pairing of the two was natural and zesty nonetheless.

1. Turkey & Ranch Delite (26g Protein)

  • What It Is: oven-roasted turkey, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, red onions and peppercorn ranch dressing on toasted hearty multigrain bread
  • Price: $8

I was impressed with how black pepper-y the ranch dressing was; it brought nuance and heat to this otherwise plain-Jane handheld. Again, I would have preferred mayo for its tang (the dressing was a bit thin) or cheese for added richness, but I feel like the components of this Fresh Fit Menu option comparatively made the most sense. Turkey and fresh produce are just a natural pairing, so it felt the most like a sandwich someone would custom order. Portion-wise, this one also felt the least skimped.
