Everywhere You Need to Eat in L.A. This October

Jamaican jerk grasshoppers, anyone?

There's a restaurant for your every mood in fall's Los Angeles eatery openings. Maybe you want to explore the latest trend in locavore dining. Or have a comforting bowl of pasta. Or perhaps—and who doesn't feel like this sometimes?—you just want a nice crunchy beetle on top of your taco. It's all here, so bon appétit.

Mr Holmes Bakehouse

Believe the hype: This just-opened Highland Park bakery makes deadly-delish baked goods. Take the cruffin: It’s a hybrid of a muffin and croissant (like a Cronut, but baked instead of fried).

Manuela

This brand-new Arts District restaurant inside the Hauser Wirth gallery building has a standout brunch that includes smoked country ham served with peaches and ricotta (chef Wes Whitsell’s from Texas, ya’ll). Dinner service starts October 19.

Destroyer

Maybe you’ve heard of the neo-Nordic food movement, in which foraged, pickled and locally farmed foods are arranged all arty-like on your plate? That’s what’s happening at this new 16-seat restaurant in Culver City, and deliciously. Open only for breakfast and lunch, and catering to the neighborhood's creative professionals (architecture firms and The Revenant director Alejandro Iñárritu’s offices are nearby), Destroyer is worth a trip if you’re not local. Savor the beef tartare served in a crispy parsnip cone, and congratulate yourself on how with-it you are.

Z Pastabar

It’s the perfect fast-casual meal to break your no-carbs rule. Pastabar is the West Side’s new build-your-own noodle shop, where you can get anything from a steaming carbonara or vegan rotini or customize by choosing among 10 pasta types, 10 sauces and 30 toppings. Order with a side salad and split with a friend to feel less guilty.

The Pestaurant

Insects—they’re annoying, creepy…and actually delicious. More than 2 billion people eat protein- and mineral-rich bugs regularly, and the U.N. wants us to eat more. Try some at this 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. October 8 pop-up serving a half-dozen dishes including barbecued beetle tacos and Jamaican jerk-seasoned grasshoppers with pineapple salsa. It’s sponsored by Western Exterminator and Mondo Taco, but we have their promise that these are all farmed, not caught in someone’s floorboards. (And every order includes a dollar donation to the Westside Food Bank.)
