The Best New Ice Cream Spots to Try This Summer
San Francisco has no shortage of small-batch ice cream shops, but the old guard has some stiff competition now. All sorts of Instagram-worthy treats have descended upon the city, and we’ve got the scoop (see what we did there?). From churro-like chimney cones to flavors exclusive to the 7x7, here’s all the trendy ice cream we’re craving.
TAIYAKI SOFT SERVE AT UJI TIME
You’ve likely seen the novelty fish-shaped cake cones (called taiyaki) all over social, but you must experience the Japanese soft serve for yourself. Make a beeline for the Japantown mall and get a swirl of matcha in a freshly made shell, stat.

ROLLED ICE CREAM AT LET’S ROLL
This Thai-style preparation—ice cream poured into a chilled metal “grill,” frozen and then scraped into rolls—is having a moment. We’ll take the Oreo ice cream drizzled with chocolate and topped with a cookie, of course. If the line out the door’s got you down, try the rolled ice-cream tacos at the brand-new Roll Up Creamery Café in the Mission instead.

SONOMA ROSÉ ICE CREAM AT SMITTEN
Ice cream infused with rosé wine—now that’s something to get excited about. Smitten teamed up with Scribe Winery and pastry chef Emily Luchetti (of Big Night Restaurant Group) to create this subtle and sophisticated seasonal flavor. You can get it all summer long at Smitten locations and on the dessert menu at Petit Marlowe.

CHOCOLATE DATE SHAKE AT SALT & STRAW
It’s one of August’s five farmers’ market flavors exclusive to the San Francisco scoop shop. The sweetness of dates balances out the bitterness of dark chocolate in a combo perfect for Salt & Straw’s freshly made waffle cones.

ARTISANAL GELATO AT COLETTA CRUISER
The SoMa scoop shop that churns out silky, sweet gelato made and pasteurized on site just opened a second location in the Mission. The Coletta Cruiser, a bike turned ice cream stand, has popped up at Harrington Galleries on Valencia and is serving up rotating flavors in house-made cones. The pistachio with Maldon sea salt will change how you think of pistachio ice cream.
