You thought kids saying “6–7” was confusing? Well, there’s a new slang term taking over TikTok, and it all started with one indie rock singer’s social experiment.

Last week, indie rock musician Sophia James posted seven TikToks in a row, each featuring her music, hoping one would finally catch fire. Her seventh post took off, racking up more than 34 million views as of October 23.

“I have posted seven videos tonight—and this is the seventh one—just as a little science experiment to see what kind of video gets the most reach,” James says in the clip. “And I don’t know what that says about you. But you’re in Group 7, welcome!”

And just like that, Group 7 became the internet’s newest obsession. The comments were flooded with declarations like, “I (hereby) declare group 7 is the most elite group” and “Group 7 is the hot girl group; I don’t make the rules.”

Even celebrities and brands are now getting in on the trend, with the likes of Barbara CorcoranNaomi Osaka and the official account for the Kansas City Chiefs making references to the inside joke.

But here’s the catch: You can’t just decide to be in Group 7. To be an official member of the internet's coolest group, you have to have found James’s video organically on your For You Page. (Sorry, typing “Group 7” into your search bar and then watching the video doesn't count).

So, if you’re reading this because someone sent it to you? Sorry. You’re probably Group 8.
