Terrifying New Shark Flick Hits #1 on Netflix (as if I Wasn't Already Afraid to Go in the Water)

It’s endorsed by Stephen King, so it’s gotta be good

Go figure, just when I was getting over my fear of sharks, a new thriller about the predator has made its way to the top of the Netflix charts. It’s called Under Paris and, of course, I’m going to watch it.

The movie follows Sophia (Bérénice Beto), a marine biologist, whose fellow researchers are all killed by a deadly shark named Lilith. As a result she gives up studying climate-induced shark mutations—that is until five years later when Mika (Léa Léviant), an environmental activist, spots a huge shark prowling the Seine River just days before Paris hosts the World Triathlon Championship. Here’s the kicker: It’s the same shark Sophia was obsessed with. So naturally, Sophia dives back into her research to avert disaster. Now, it’s up to Sophia, Mika and a skeptical cop (Nassim Lyes) to stop a potential massacre before time runs out.

If the synopsis isn’t enticing enough, how about the fact that the “King of Horror” himself, Stephen King, endorsed the film. Yes, the man who brought us Carrie, The Shining, It, Misery, Pet Sematary and countless other spooky and suspenseful works of art, commended Under Paris.

“I thought UNDER PARIS would be a jokey movie, like SHARKNADO, but Twitter convinced me to give it a watch, and it's really quite good,” the American author wrote on X (formally Twitter). “The last 25 minutes were amazing.”

Since making its debut on June 5, Under Paris has skyrocketed to the top spot on the Netflix Global Top 10 chart for non-English films. During the week of June 3 to June 9, this gripping film snagged an impressive 40.9 million views, securing its reign as the number one non-English language flick on Netflix. It didn't stop there—Under Paris is currently the #2 film in the U.S. as of today.

Horror or not, looks like viewers worldwide can't get enough!
