a big month for the WNBA

I probably could have guessed that October would be all about the WNBA. After all, the finals kicked off on October 3 with a head-to-head battle between the Las Vegas Aces and Phoenix Mercury. (The Aces are currently ahead with two wins.) This is the first time the league is using a best-of-seven format, making it potentially the longest finals ever, which is fantastic news for fans. But the real drama is happening off the court and involves far more than just the two teams competing for the championship title.

The WNBA is currently embroiled in high-stakes negotiations for a Collective Bargaining Agreement that would hopefully mean higher standards for referees and, most importantly, a higher revenue share percentage for players. (For reference, NBA players receive almost 50 percent revenue share, while WNBA players currently receive just 9.3 percent.) The parties involved have until October 31 to reach a new agreement or to extend the old one, so you can bet I and every other fan will be waiting with bated breath to see not just which team takes home the championship title, but what happens with the CBA too.

But, of course, basketball isn’t the only sport heating up this month—there’s also tons of soccer with regular season NWSL and WSL games, as well as some international friendlies between the national team and Portugal on October 23 and New Zealand on the 29. Not to mention artistic gymnastics, golf, boxing, beach volleyball and even some tennis. Here’s the biggest news in women’s sports this October.

They’ve since received an outpouring of support from other players, coaches and fans.
